5 FACTS: Answer Me 1994

TITLE: Answer Me 1994 (2013)
ALSO KNOWN ASReply 1994 or The Love of My Life is Trash- no, wait just kidding
STARRING: Go Ah Ra, Jung Woo, Yoo Yun Suk

Once again, we have our 5 Facts series, where we tell you the five most important (spoiler-free!) things you need to know about a drama before you watch it! I mean, haven’t you ever looked at a drama and thought, will this work for me?? (???) Will this destroy me emotionally?? (Very likely) Is this as trashy as it looks??? (We’ll be the judge of that, thx bye) Should I, in fact, commit 20+ hours of my life to watching this???? (#time is $$ 2k16)

So, without further ado, here are five things you need to know about Answer Me 1994 before you jump in:

FACT #1: FANGIRL VALIDATION 1k94

So, to get started on the premise, our story is set between 1994 and 2013 with a group of friends originally from “the countryside” of Korea all living together in a home-stay in Seoul as they go to college. Two of our home-stay residents are OG Fangirls. The sweet precious girl above is a freak for Seo Taiji and Boys while Na Jung (pictured below) is a nut for college basketball and one player in particular.

Sure, people find it kind of weird (mostly Na Jung’s parents who run the home-stay but honestly, they’re olds, of course they find it weird) but for the most part, their friends are like “okay, you do you boo” and it’s awesome.

Bonus fact: The music for the show is amazing and on-point; you get to know Korean cultural… history I guess. It’s hard to call 20 years ago history, but whatever.

FACT #2: NA JUNG IS MY SPIRIT ANIMAL AND PROBABLY YOURS TOO

Listen, I know not everyone is like me, but Na Jung is disgustingly relatable. She is designed to be, of course, but her true-to-self approach to life is something I love. She’s sassy, smart, and a treasure and she knows it which I am all about.  lol

Plus, her relationships with the others in the home-stay are just precious and wonderful. I love her so much.

FACT #3: TRASH IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE

Okay, so if you peruse the tumblr tag (don’t, if you haven’t seen it!!) trash is not everyone’s favorite character, but he is 298234827430% my absolute favorite character. I love trash. Trash exemplifies the trash that Mari and I so widely extol. His nickname is literally trash, what more could you want?!

In all honesty, though, he’s a great character who brings me lots of joy. He cares for others, laughs freely, and is generally a disgustingly good guy. I literally yell “love of my life, trash!” every time he’s on screen. Please, if you watch this show, watch it for these gems of characters.

FACT #4: YOU WILL WANT TO LIVE IN A HOME-STAY AFTER WATCHING

Okay, listen up, I almost wish I had lived in a home-stay when I was in college because this is the trashiest group of children that I could have imagined under one roof and one of them doesn’t even officially live there. While it shows the cruel adjustment of learning how to live with others, it also shows the joy of community you can get from having a good set of house/dorm/residence-mates.

Though, I gotta say, no matter how hot it is outside y’all, stay out of the fucking refrigerator. Love you, tiny one, but like… don’t do that.

FACT #5: GUESSING HUSBANDS SUCKS BUT YOU WILL STILL WANT TO WATCH THE ENTIRE ANSWER ME SERIES ANYWAY

Okay, I’ll admit, the theme of ‘Who is the husband??’ that runs through each of the Answer Me/Reply series is something that bores me. I hate it, if I am being perfectly honest. Plus, it seems to divide the fandom because you don’t know someone is the second lead until the last episode, so it’s totally possible that who you root for will end up being the second lead without warning. That being said, every person I’ve wanted to be the husband has ended up the husband so… I guess it doesn’t apply to me??

Regardless, Answer Me 1994 has more to offer than just “HUSBAND WHO?!” While its pacing could use some serious work, it is a hilarious look into how young adults navigate life and develop- and it’s entertaining as hell. The characters are so solid and show so much growth throughout the show that you can’t help but fall in love.
